Made for the solo exhibition After the house is burnt, pick up the nails, Sonbuk-gu is a 1.5 x 3 meter billboard image of high-rise housing blocs in the district of Songbuk-gu, Seoul, South Korea. Songbuk-gu was taken during 2005/2006 residency in Seoul, which observed the rapid modernisation of an Asian city in a modern Confucian culture from the perspective of a ‘Waygookin’ (foreigner).

Exploring the idiosyncrasies of an unfamiliar culture, investigating seemingly impenetrable cultural references, fragments of advertising and television that are present in the work function as a common ground between East and West, offer some resolution through this shared, global mode of representation.
